Staff Stories: Daisie-Marie Twist (DMT), Cloud Infrastructure Engineer

Our staff stories are back!

Say hello to Daisie-Marie, one of our Cloud Infrastructure Engineers here at Netpremacy.

Daisie-Marie has been with us for nearly four years, starting as a Support Engineer before transitioning into all things Infrastructure after her first year. Read this blog to learn more about her journey at Netpremacy.

What is your role at Netpremacy?

My role is a Cloud Infrastructure Engineer, part of the Google Cloud Engineering team and wider Delivery team of Professional Services.

Centred around Google’s cloud platform and its extensive products and offerings, the role is certainly multifaceted. The key functions generally fall into one of two areas:

Cloud infrastructure – The engineering of integrated components to deliver cloud computing systems and environments in the cloud. That is, infrastructure to implement distinct applications and solutions and even enterprise-scale landing zones or migrating infrastructure from on-premises data centres into the cloud.

Cloud architecture – Designing the framework of the infrastructures to achieve the “blueprint” of a well-architected cloud operating model. This includes networking patterns, maximising security and compliance, modernising for performance, cost optimisation and even sustainability.

When providing expert advice and implementation to support customers on their cloud journey, I pride myself on advocating best practices combined with industry experience and widely used and battle-tested patterns and approaches.

What 3 traits do you think are vital for your role?

Besides technical skills, I would consider the following as equally complementary (if not more) to the nature of the role:

• Creativity and resourcefulness - applied to problem-solving

• Self-direction and initiative - applied to learning

• Curiosity - to remain relevant

What are some of the ways you have grown in your role?

Over the past year or so, I’ve developed a particular interest in DevOps practices, the application of its methodologies and tools in Google’s technology stack, pioneering adoption of its principles internally at Netpremacy with an early working group, and have cultivated skills in practice using industry-standard tools, such as Terraform for Infrastructure as Code (IaC).

I have also applied this specialism in customer projects, adding extra value to help meet their strategic goals. One example, in preparation for cloud migration, was the development and implementation of a bespoke organisation landing zone in IaC. Even during the early stages of the cloud migration, it became apparent that this foundation was a catalyst of cultural shift, as the customer’s stakeholders had observed a breaking down of silos between their development and infrastructure teams.

What are the top 3 things you love about the company?

1. Opportunites

2. Culture

3. Flexible Working

Where do you see yourself in 3 years?

Aligned to personal goals, some possibilities are:

  • Creating and delivering technical content in some form of medium: digital, blogs, maybe even public speaking and presentations.

  • Co-/Leading a community group like a Google Developer Group.

  • Potentially leading a small team of engineers in the workplace or being a mentor.

What would be your alternative career path?

I have an active lifestyle outside of work, so an alternative path would perhaps be something physically challenging, like a professional athlete in an extreme sport or Olympic weightlifting.
