With
new legislation and industry regulations to comply with in order to
continue operating, companies are required to not only put in place
effective security technology to protect their networks but must
also ensure that those systems are up to date and performing to
maximum effectiveness.
Failure to comply can result in suspension of critical services such
as card payment processing facilities or financial service
compliance, that could ultimately threaten the whole business.
For
many large organisations that operate complex network topologies,
maintaining a high level security posture is especially challenging.
This is particularly the case where changes to the system are
happening on an ongoing basis as new software, users and hardware is
being added to potentially thousands of different network nodes on
an almost daily basis.
In
this scenario it is very easy to see how vulnerabilities can be
inadvertently introduced into the system which can then be detected
and exploited by a moderately determined hacker.
As a consequence, many organisations
are being advised to build in regular scheduled vulnerability scans
into their corporate security best practice policies, to provide an
early warning of critical areas of vulnerability, in time to prevent
a potential breach of their defences.
