THE PROBLEM

Increasing volumes of spam draining company bandwidth and IT resource

Home to world-class film, television and commercial production along with post production facilities, The Pinewood Group provide facilities for major national and international film productions, including, Sherlock Holmes, Robin Hood and James Bond.

Like many organisations, Pinewood depend on email communications as a vital part of conducting business. Like many companies, Pinewood began experiencing a surge in unwanted messages, becoming a major hindrance for its employees and partners, over the years.

Their challenge was to find a better way to manage nuisance email or spam, and to minimise the amount of time their employees and IT staff had to spend weeding out inappropriate messages.

Pinewood’s email infrastructure is architected around Microsoft Exchange, it was vital the chosen solution integrated seamlessly in this environment, incorporating active directory synchronisation.

Pinewood historically adopted an on-premise solution for email security and compliance, but as sophistication and volume of spam traffic increased this approach became a significant drain on user time and IT resource. Their existing anti-spam and email security solution was a heavy burden on several levels.

Primary: As spam increased, the email server

infrastructure had to manage increased loads, processing thousands of messages daily which caused a strain on the infrastructure.

Secondary: Pinewood’s IT staff had to ensure their on-premise solution was continually kept up to date, had the latest software patches, and didn’t reach end of life.

In addition to this, the organisation was suffering from Directory Harvest Attacks, Denial of Service attacks, with the on-site approach providing no solution.
